Dentist Livingstone: What are the pains and troubles of having braces on your teeth?

What are the pains and troubles of having braces on your teeth?
My dentist told me I should consider braces. My teeth aren't bad so it would only be on for a year. But I would like to know what it's like. And is it possible to do one side at a time? Bottom first then second after? Or do u have to have both on. My upper teeth at good. But bottom are squished a little.

Answer
I haven't had braces myself, but most of my friends have so I reckon I can give you a pretty reliable picture.
You'd have to ask your orthodontist, but I'm pretty sure that you can get the bottom done first, and the top after. If you don't need braces on top, I don't think you have to get them on. One of my friends had very squished up teeth on the bottom. She got a couple removed, then on went the bottom braces. A week or two later, she got the top ones put on.
Supposedly, it's hard work. You have to brush with more than one sort of toothbrush, to get in and out of the wires to keep them clean, so they don't rust. You can't eat things like apples, which you have to bite into, because it risks breaking the braces. Too many soft drinks aren't good either, because the bubbles erode the metal. The braces often cause cuts on your mouth, which are really painful. If a wire breaks, you have to get to the orthodontist asap, and it causes more cuts. When they're tightened, the pressure causes your mouth to hurt as well, and when you first get them on, it's hard to eat anything. It gets better, and soon you're used to them.
They're a big hassle, but if it's only for a year, I'm sure you can handle it. You can get different colours, too! When they come off, people tell me it feels really weird. You used to have something there, and suddenly it's gone! Your teeth feel all smooth and slimy, but are straight!
Good luck, hope this helped!

Well, I've had braces for 3 years. It sucks for the first two weeks. Badly. It hurts like crazy. You can't eat anything. And to top it all of your orthodontist is telling you you can't eat hard candy and popcorn and pizza crust and doritos anymore. Well, let me tell you, as soon as your out of pain again, you can eat those things as long as your careful. I do it all the time. Everyone does. Then you just get used to it. The pains and troubles are really only the first two weeks and once you've survived those, you're good. Hope that helped. (source: Yahoo! Answers)
