Braces Wantirna South: What happens after the Orthodontist examines your teeth before braces?

What happens after the Orthodontist examines your teeth before braces?
I'm going to the orthodontist to see if I need braces, but I'm curious as to how things work out.
If I do need braces how long do I have to wait until I get braces?
What do they do and say?
What should I do to prepare for braces?

Answer
Your first exam will be just like the regular dentist. They start by looking and taking x-rayss. Your doctor should be walking you through each step. If there is anything you don't understand be sure to ask. Being a little nervous is completely normal.

The timing depends on what you need done, there is lots of waiting bring you ipod. One of the first steps is your mold- they take a plaster mold of your teeth, its a very odd feeling but doesn't hurt or taste bad. I had an overbite so they started with an expander (a bar that sits behind my lower teeth) for several months. That was put on within a month or so of my first appointment.

Whenever they're going to be actually working, putting them on, adjusting or tightening, take something for pain before you go. Your mouth will get very achy, not only from the work they're doing but also from sitting still with your mouth open for so long. Again I recommend bringing music or something to play with or read. Theres a lot of sitting and waiting.

I have to admit they were totally worth it.

you have your molds, wax, x-rays and photo's done which are then sent off to see if you're eligible for them
then if you are they'll come up with a treatment plan
then actually getting your braces could take anywhere from a couple of weeks to a few months depending on your ortho. (source: Yahoo! Answers)
